"Alix- the assertion of a genre, the historical comic", by Michel Thiébaut

By Michel Thiébaut, Professor, University of Besançon

A lecture in the context of the temporary exhibition “ArchéoAlix: Antiquity imag(in)ed by Jacques Martin”

Many people regard Jacques Martin as the “father of the historical comic”. The first part of the lecture on the origins and emergence of the Alix series placed its inception in its published (Journal Tintin) and cultural context. The speaker went on to recall how the series developed, episode after episode, up to its recognition as the cult series of the historical comic in the early 1980s.

The second part – Alix and some documentary sources – related the series to the study of Ancient History (from the standpoint of intellectual culture). Finally the speaker gave an example of the use of the series in an educational context and concluded with a brief outline of the prospects opened up by historical comics set in Classical Antiquity.
