Crafts and trade

Agriculture, animal husbandry and wine-growing were certainly the main economic resources of the Roman colony of Nyon. Craftsmen also played an important role in the life of the town: blacksmiths, bronze smiths, weavers, tanners, potters and other skilled trades supplied the trade circuits with their output.

The products of these activities were sold in shops or markets where they rubbed shoulders with imported goods, sometimes from very far away, like olive oil, wine, spices and fish sauces. The existence of a macellum (covered market) in Nyon, for trade in food products, reveals the town’s economic importance in the region.
