"Wheat, the other gold of the Romans"

Dates : 26.09.13 - 02.02.14

Roman gold,

was also corn – an essential part of everyday life.

In this exhibition, designed in 2010 by the Forum antique de Bavay, the archaeological Museum of the Département du Nord (France), the corn seed is scattered in every direction – Roman society in its entirety emerges in a new light: the “harvesters” pushed by donkeys, public distributions of corn, bread to eat with oysters …

These surprising discoveries also provide information on the main trends in the food, economics, trade, politics and even the religion of the Romans.

Panem et circenses, bread and games … Corn was also a tool of power in the hands of the Roman emperors.
Corn does not just make crumbs, it reveals an essential facet of Roman society.
