Voices of Palmyra

Palmyra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most emblematic cities of ancient Syria

Palmyra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most emblematic cities of ancient Syria. In the 1950s, it was excavated as part of the first major Swiss archaeological project abroad. Among the monuments studied from the Roman period is the temple of Baalshamîn, the «god of the heavens».

In 2015, a large part of the archaeological site was destroyed and ravaged by the terrorist organization “Islamic State”. Palmyra was devasted. Since 2017, an important archive, kept in the University of Lausanne, has made it possible to consider the virtual reconstruction of this exceptional heritage. Thanks to field documents, photographs and modern digital reconstruction techniques, the memory of Palmyra can, in part, be recovered and passed on to future generations.

This exhibition, created in partnership with the Institute of Archaeology and Classical Studies of the University of Lausanne, takes you on a journey through the voices, past and present, of those who knew Palmyra, for having worked or lived there. An exhibition that links past, present and future.
