Introduction to the archaeology of Roman construction

The Roman Museum is delighted to welcome the University of Lausanne (Institut d’Archéologie et des Sciences de l’Antiquité) for a training course in the archaeology of Roman construction, under the supervision of Professor Hélène Dessales.

Designed for Master’s students, this project focuses on the study of observable buildings: stratigraphic analysis and phasing of structures, characterization of construction techniques, survey of a representative sample of 1m2 masonry. The aim is to restore the dynamics of the Basilica’s construction site, by examining its foundations – a key element in the monument’s design and construction – and, more broadly, to understand the knowledge and practices of builders in Roman Nyon.

Aurélie Terrier, a lecturer at EPFL, is in charge of the surveys and photogrammetry required for the students’ work.
