The collections

Since its inauguration, the State (the Canton of Vaud) has officially recognised the responsibility of the Roman Museum, an archaeological site museum, for the preservation and showcasing of the archaeological material from the Roman period found in the district of Nyon.

The collections are exclusively furnished from the archaeological material discovered during excavations conducted by the Vaud Service of Cantonal Archaeology. The objects for which the Museum is responsible come mainly from the urban centre of the Colonia Iulia Equestris (Nyon/Noviodunum). But other sites located on the territoryof the colony (in particular Commugny) have also furnished artefacts which the Museum conserves and exhibits.

The Museum’s existence and activities are directly linked to the progress of archaeological and historical research on the colony’s centre and territory. For example, the excavations carried out when the La Duche car park was being built gifted the Museum with three bronze statuettes of divinities which are a prime attraction of the permanent exhibition.
